“Am I too young for Botox?” gets asked in my chair weekly — usually by someone who’s been told by the internet that twenty-five is the deadline. Let me give you the version I’d give my own daughter: it’s about your lines, not your birthday.
The line test
Look in the mirror and raise your eyebrows, then relax. Frown hard, then relax. Watch what happens next:
- Lines that appear with the expression and vanish when your face rests are dynamic lines. Every face has them. They are not a problem to fix — they’re just your face working.
- Lines that linger after the expression is gone — a faint etch across the forehead, the shadow of an eleven between the brows — are lines in the process of becoming permanent. This is the moment “preventative” actually means something.
Botox quiets the muscle that creases the skin. Start around the time lines begin to linger, and you’re preventing the crease from etching deeper. Start years before that, and you’re mostly spending money to treat a problem you don’t have yet — and I’ll tell you so.
What preventative treatment looks like
Smaller, conservative doses, often less frequently than corrective work — the goal is softening the habit, not freezing the face. If you’ve read my note on how long Botox lasts, you know I dose first-timers conservatively on purpose. Preventative patients are the ultimate version of that philosophy: the lightest touch that changes the trajectory.
And no — starting early doesn’t commit you to a lifetime subscription. If you stop, your muscles simply go back to work. What you keep is every year the crease didn’t deepen.
The honest “not yet”
Some weeks, the most valuable thing I do in a consult is decline. If your lines vanish fully at rest, my honest advice is usually skincare, sunscreen, and patience — come back when the mirror changes. A practice that will tell you not yet is the same practice you can trust with now.
The bottom line
Skip the birthday math. Do the line test, and if something’s starting to linger, come in — we’ll look at your face in motion and decide together. (If you’re also weighing which product, Botox vs Dysport covers how I choose. And if you’re local to the lakes district, the studio is right in your neighborhood — see Ocotillo Botox.) The earlier conversation is free of commitment — and it’s the one that keeps your options widest.
